Broadspire Launches BOLD, a Custom PPO Network Strategy

ATLANTA (June 21, 2010) -- Broadspire, a Crawford Company and leading third party administrator of workers compensation claims, liability claims and medical management services, has introduced the BOLD network, a custom preferred provider organization (PPO) strategy that includes targeted selection of medical networks on a state-by-state basis to produce superior outcomes for clients.

"For decades, traditional PPO network solutions have been a steadfast component of the workers compensation industry. But while preferred provider discounts still help reduce claim costs, they do not completely address today's complex challenges," said Danielle Lisenbey, chief operating officer, medical management services. "Our new state-stratified, multi-tiered approach allows us to partner with the best network by region, industry and sometimes even by company."

The BOLD - Broadspire's Original Landmark Design - network features:

• Regional networks - Broadspire works to find the best network in each state or region. Regional networks typically have better relationships with local providers, which often translate into more favorable rates.

• Specialty networks - Broadspire also contracts with special networks that concentrate on workers compensation needs such as durable medical equipment (DME) and physical therapy.

"Instead of casting a wide net in hopes of a good outcome, this level of customization can produce superior penetration rates and savings when compared to the rest of the industry," Lisenbey said.

Included among Broadspire's networks and partners are: Aetna, Align Networks, Black Diamond, Express Scripts, Healthcare Solutions, HFN, MedFocus, MTI, Next Imaging, Rockport, Signature Networks, Three Rivers, Total Medical Solutions, Universal Smart Comp and United Health. Broadspire's PPO website, www.BroadspirePPO.com, features the ability to search for providers and networks by state.

In addition, through the use of objective metrics, Broadspire is able to identify needs and cost drivers to build network solutions that are unique and specific to clients. Some examples of cost-saving solutions include:

• A DME formulary with integrated clinical protocols
• Physical therapy protocols and utilization review guidelines
• Diagnostic imaging unmanaged & retrospective guidelines
• Clinical home health guidelines and vendor integration
• Coding methodology for medical and non-medical transportation.

"The key to our documented success is working with the right strategic partners and applying proprietary clinical intervention triggers to make the greatest difference in reducing claim costs," Lisenbey said. "We measure our success by our ability to improve our clients' bottom line, and our medical network strategy continues to evolve to meet the ever-changing demands of managing workers compensation costs."

About Broadspire

Broadspire, a leading international third party administrator for large self-insured organizations, offers a broad array of customized claim and medical management services designed to increase employee productivity and contain costs.
Workplace accidents resulting in permanent disabilities are the most expensive workers' comp claims. Fortunately, only about 1.1 percent of workers' comp indemnity claims involve permanent disability.

However, these cases represent 11.4 percent of the costs of claims, according to a 2005 study by the National Council of Compensation Insurers titled "Demographic Factors to Consider: Calculating Lifetime Awards on Workers' Compensation Claims," by John Robertson and Dan Corro.)

The high medical cost of permanent disability claims comes as no surprise. Most insurance companies provide for a lifetime award to compensate injured workers for lost wages but continue to pay medical costs for the life of the claimant. The injuries are usually complex--defined as involving more than one body system and separate diagnoses, physicians and treatments for each system. Permanent disability claims usually require home healthcare services and products, including big-ticket items, like power chairs, home modifications and vehicle modifications.

Mattress selection is an aspect of complex medical care that few workers' compensation payers -- or providers, for that matter -- take seriously enough. Rehab mattresses provide positioning, support, comfort, and protection against wounds. Their pressure controls, inflation/deflation rates, rotation, bellow designs and materials (foam, gel, layered foam, sand, fluid, and combinations of these) are the details that make the difference.

There are hundreds of rehabilitative mattresses on the market, all addressing specific issues. However, most workers' compensation mattress scripts are limited to a couple of manufacturers and models. This is partly due to physicians' familiarity only with brands used in hospitals and partly to durable medical equipment (DME) companies' limited access to manufacturers and distributors.

With long-term disability claims comprising more than 11 percent of the workers' compensation medical dollar, mattresses are important cost considerations.

We are happy to note that Total Medical Solutions' Vice President, Rehabilitation Technology and Complex Care is included in the article. Here's an excerpt:

With the increasing speed at which technology advances nowadays, it is no surprise that devices used in therapy have evolved quite a bit from what they were 20, even 10 years ago. Brand-new gadgets and new models of existing gadgets are constantly being introduced to the market. While most of these advances are geared toward patient comfort and convenience, sometimes it takes a little bit of education and training to make these seemingly autonomously-functioning tools work for the patient instead of against him.

The sheer number of items that can fall under the assistive technology category is astonishing. Anything from wheelchairs and canes to verbal communicators and speech-recognition devices can be considered assistive technology. Despite whatever form the item happens to take, be it the latest high-tech gadgetry or something as basic as a walking cane, each device requires a certain amount of training to be able to use it correctly and effectively. Depending on the individual, sometimes a motorized wheelchair requires just as much training to operate as a speech device.

ORLANDO, FLA. (Aug. 25, 2009) -- Total Medical Solutions (TMS) made Inc. Magazine's the top 5,000 fastest growing private companies in the country, coming in as the 15th fastest growing firm in Florida and among the top five in the Orlando market. The Inc. 5000 is ranked according to percentage revenue growth from 2005 through 2008.

TMS provides home health and complex care services and products to the workers' compensation industry. The company coordinates the home care of employees who have suffered complex or catastrophic injuries, including home health services, rehab technology products, home modifications, and medical equipment and supplies.

Cara Barde, president of TMS, credits its growth to its focus on providing home health
care services and products for complex workers' compensation cases, noting that
many competitors focus on standard durable medical goods (DME) or have DME as an
adjunct to pharmacy services.

"Home health care and working with complex injuries are the priorities for TMS," Barde said. "Complex, long-term cases demand highly experienced certified rehabilitation technicians, very specialized technology and equipment, and account coordinators with significant industry expertise. Our professionals average 10 years experience in the field."

TMS' customer service drives its growth, which primarily comes through referrals from
existing payer clients and word-of-mouth. "Instead of creating high-volume call
centers and decentralizing claim activities, we have a dedicated account coordinator
working directly with the injured employee, the physicians, nurses, payers,
manufacturers, rehabilitation technicians and everyone else who touches the case."

This approach, which was intended to provide the highest quality of care, has also
given the company an unparalleled reputation for cost controls, according to Joseph
Paduda, a national workers' compensation expert who consults with TMS, "Most of
the real cost in workers' compensation is in complex claims, and TMS works very
effectively with adjusters to ensure claimants receive the services and support they
need, very cost-effectively. This is more efficient than adjusters having to piecemeal
services and equipment that may not work together seamlessly."

Additionally, TMS can guarantee considerably lower prices than competitors on many
items because it buys direct from manufacturers and stores supplies and equipment in its own warehouses.

TMS is management owned, so people have a personal interest in client retention.
"Fostering long-term partnerships with our client-payers and with patients is key to
our success," Barde said.

Founded in 1994, TMS serves clients nationally from its headquarters in Orlando
Florida. For more information, please call 1-800-700-9393 or visit www.NewTMS.com.
